Makeup has now become the standard essential these days; everyone wears foundation, mascara, eyeliner, blush, primer, lipstick, perfectly pencilled in eyebrows, and cheek bones so contoured we have all begun looking like Angelina Jolie replicas (with a slight tan).
But if you’re anything like me and only have the basic knowledge and skillset when it comes to applying makeup, barely being able to blend the foundation into the neck crease at the best of times, and looking like someone gave you a black eye when trying to do the Smokey-eyed look, it gets a little difficult and time consuming trying to look Beyoncé flawless 24/7. And now, with all of these new techniques and practises that have come out, like baking and strobing (These are actual make up terms!) it has turned applying our make up, something that was once enjoyable into something so technical that its almost a headache trying to keep up.
There must be a simpler way to manoeuvre through the world of beauty, if we only had that one beauty essential, something that would accentuate our number one feature or hide our biggest insecurity.
With this in mind, I decided to seek out my good friend and make up artist Nikita Ellis from Creativefacez to get her guidance and expert opinion to break down make-up into its most basic form so that we can all understand (present company included) and discover what the bare essentials are for our own individual beauty requirements.
If you have naturally small eyes the only tool you need in your beauty arsenal is eyeliner and mascara. Using the combination definitely enhances your eyes and makes them pop. Fear no more about your eyes getting lost in the rest of your face, using these two will have your eyes looking fabulous and make people have a double take.
The days of having to constantly worry about if your going to cause an accident while you are walking down the road because of the glare that’s radiating off your face are over. Primer is your new best friend; this handy little jar of deliciousness can be used with or without foundation. However, if you are going to apply foundation, the primer is the 1st step you take after the face has been cleansed and moisturized. You really cannot go wrong with investing in a primer, it is the perfect weapon against oily skin as it minimises the appearance of pores and evens skin tone.
Moisturize, MOISTURIZE, MOUSTURIZE! I really cannot say this enough. If you have dry skin, invest in a good face crème, preferably with a high SPF, and start drinking plenty of water of course.
Instead of spending hours trying to masterfully hide every imperfection by applying a full face of make-up trying to hide away those embarrassing blemishes, why not just invest in some concealer or BB crème. Way easier, way quicker and way cheaper than having to go through the whole process of foundation and setting it with some powder. Concealer is great for hiding those dark circles under your eyes, blemishes, scars, even age spots, the list could go on but I think you get the idea.
No Eye Brows! *GASP*
I’m not sure when eyebrows made such a comeback but they have, brows are now the be all and end all for beauty bloggers, make up artists and especially the average Jane. Who has perfectly shaped eyebrows, or more importantly who doesn’t- is definitely the topic of conversation for most ladies who lunch these days.
To get those perfectly preened brows you must firstly have the perfect shape, which can be profiled for you by your local beauty salon, getting rid of those straggly hairs is a necessity. Using an eyebrow pencil or powder that matches the colour of your own eyebrows is also essential, and blending is another critical factor to make sure they come out looking natural and not like you just got a box of crayons and decided to use your face as the display.
If you’re tired of looking like the ghost of Christmas past and want to add some life back into your appearance, blush is the way to go. It simulates a natural glow and adds life and energy back into your face, not only that but it can also help structure your face shape.
Much like blush, contouring is what you need in your life if you’re tired of the way your face looks. Yes that sounds silly, but contouring your face can actually make it appear to be a different shape. (It confuses me too don’t worry) this one is best left to the professionals but if you are tired of the face that was blessed upon you by your parents genes, then invest in some new brushes and sign up to YouTube so you can follow one of the beauty bloggers for tips on how to make the drastic change to your face shape by contouring.
Last but by no means least, if you do not like your lips there is something you can do, besides trying that whole Kylie Jenner lip enhancing challenge (a bad bad, very bad idea) why not just try out different colours. Lipstick is amazing because it brings attention to your lips and can also signify different feelings and emotions just based on the colour. If you want to go for a sexy come-hither look, red lips are the way to go. Black lipstick can signify boldness and confidence- although be careful because you could also end up looking gothic, and if that’s not what you’re going for then avoid. Pink lipstick is playful and fun, and if you happen to suffer from dry of cracking lips then the best course of action for you may just be a lip balm to help inject some of the moisture back into your lips.
So I hope this helps answer some of our own questions about make up and how we can accentuate our best features or hide our deepest insecurities without having to spend hours in front of the mirror.
