We are all guilty of buying into the beauty industry façade, believing that long nails will make us sexy, long lashes will make us mysterious, and long hair will make us beautiful, for the most part, these extended features are all perceived to be true. But what happens if all of these add-ons and changes trying to ‘improve’ ourselves actually have a damaging effect?
If you are lucky enough not to have had a negative reaction to any of these beauty additions that’s great. But unfortunately the beauty industry is so fickle and unpredictable, you are just one Novalash application away from wishing you hadn’t. It is a system that has been designed to make us feel effortlessly beautiful, but have you ever experienced the ugly side of the beauty industry.
I’m sure we are all guilty of this one, we spend 600$ on Remy, then a further 120$ to install the hair, after spending all that money, who wants to take the weave out 4-6 weeks later. But keeping the weave in for too long is damaging to your hair and can actually lead to hair loss. Your hair needs time to breathe and wearing the same weave style for more than 6 weeks without washing can lead to unsanitary conditions.
Your hairdresser may tell you the tighter it is the longer it will last, but are you really willing to risk getting temporary or permanent traction alopecia just for an extra week of style? This form of moderate hair loss is caused by a pulling force, usually due to having your hair in braids, twists, pony tails, weaves and extensions that are too tight.
False lashes have become the new trend, I know some people that wear them so much that I have never seen them without the lashes. But constantly wearing lashes day in day out and sleeping in them is a gateway to infection. False lashes are supposed to be a temporary way to increase the length and thickness of your eyelashes, wearing false lashes to bed or for more than one day can cause bacteria to collect under the eyelash glue and on the false eyelash, causing eye infections, eye injuries, conjunctivitis or even sties.
If you are one of those ladies that can’t leave the house without at least dabbing on some light powder first, don’t worry you are not alone. But just because the majority of females above the age of 18 are walking around with their face painted, it doesn’t make it OK. Although you may not experience any adverse side effects to wearing make up, the chemicals found in many of the products can create a range of problems and damage your skin. And sleeping in your makeup is a huge no-no, unless of course you want to potentially trigger an infection, create wrinkles, or flair up with acne, make sure you are always removing your makeup before bed.
If you read all the tutorials on how to install fake lashes they all say ‘if applied correctly and properly they will cause no damage’, but what if they are not applied correctly? The consistent application of fake lashes can actually cause traction alopecia, rubbing or tugging can also cause damage to your natural lashes, and when removing the false lashes your natural lashes are often accidentally removed in the process. So while you are trying to create the illusion of having fuller, longer lashes you are actually making your own lashes thinner and shorter.
All nail technicians preach that it’s not the acrylic that causes damage to the nail, they insist that the damage is caused when your nails are being prepped to apply the acrylic or it is the way they are removed. But damage is damage, no matter if it is from the acrylic itself or the process in which it is removed. You may find that when you take off the acrylic nail, your own nail appears to be brittle, splitting and thin. During application your nails are literally drilled down and have strong chemicals applied to them such as the nail sculpting powders and gels, which can cause damage to the underlying nail. Although the extent of the damage is dependant on how long you wear the acrylic for, and how healthy your nails were prior to having the false nails applied, but as I said before- damage is damage.
So before you consider caking your face with make up just to go to the corner store, decide that you are too lazy to remove the fake lashes before bed or try to wear your weave for ‘just one more week’; remember the damage you could be causing to yourself just to keep up appearances.
