When it comes to selecting the best spread for your toast in the morning it can be quite complicated. Most of us grew up on butter, so it is familiar and comfortable, but margarine is easier to spread, and also tastes better. So which one should you buy?
With this question in mind, by the time you get to the supermarket you have surely forgotten which one is better for you, and just picked up the most recognisable, or affordable brand. But taking the time to look closer at what you are buying is important, especially if you have high cholesterol.
As a general rule, margarine is better than butter as it is made from vegetable oils, so it contains the ‘good’ type of fat that reduces the ‘bad’ cholesterol. And butter is made from animal fat, so it contains more of the ‘bad’ type of fat, that we should try to avoid.
With this in mind, don’t dive straight into the first margarine brand you see on the shelf, as not all margarines are the same. Certain brands contain trans fats, which can be labelled the ‘ugly’ kind of fat. So make sure you always check the label before buying, trans fats, similar to saturated also increases cholesterol levels. So the next time you are in the store ready to buy your morning spread always check the label. When you are looking at the label go for the brand that doesn’t have any trans fat and limited saturated.
